Acupuncture for Weight Loss
Weight Loss is greatly helped by acupuncture treatment. People often inquire about the use of the ear staple for this purpose. The ear staple is not safe because it increases the risk of infection of ear tissue, and is often administered by a person who is not licensed to do acupuncture. These ear staples are not available in acupuncture supply catalogs. Please see the Iowa Board of Medicine statement on the ear staple.
This program involves all the things that would be necessary with any weight loss program. Acupuncture alone will not make much difference in your metabolism. It will simply enhance your weight loss program. Our treatment consists of twice-weekly ear acupuncture treatments, 30 min each ($35dollars) or, alternatively, once weekly whole-body acupuncture including ear treatment ($70).
At the end of each treatment, either tiny press balls, ear seeds, press tack ear needles, or the ASP needle will be left in your ear to assist with hunger over the next few days. We do not use ‘staples’ as we believe that they are unsafe in the long run, and they are not the standard of care for licensed acupuncturists.
Of course, dietary changes must be made for good results. Laura will talk with you about strategies for changing your diet. You will be asked to keep a food diary and bring it with you to each visit. You will also be asked to weigh yourself once weekly.
Second, activity levels must be changed as appropriate. The acupuncturist will discuss this with you to determine an activity program that will fit with your lifestyle and health situation.
For some people, an herbal supplement will be recommended to assist with the process. It would work with the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine to optimize your physiology during this time. For some, taking this supplement will be critical to obtaining the desired results.
The effects of acupuncture will only work while you are having the treatments as above. We are recommending a 3 month program to start with. The first visit is 2 hours, at our normal rate of $120. After that, we recommend that you schedule appointments and prepay for a month at a time, and you will receive a 10% discount.
There are no guarantees with acupuncture for weight loss, as is true of most other weight loss programs. This program is based on the model presented by Kristi Reed, LAc of Golden Flower Chinese Herbs in Albuquerque.
